![]() “The book is never less than readable and its glimpses of American show business at its least glamorous are simple, true and sometimes rather touching.”-Times Literary Supplement ![]() Here is the life and lunatic times of the great eccentric genius, Groucho, a.k.a. With impeccable timing, outrageous humor, irreverent wit, and a superb sense of the ridiculous, Groucho tells the saga of the Marx Brothers: the poverty of their childhood in New York’s Upper East Side the crooked world of small-time vaudeville (where they learned to carry blackjacks) how a pretzel magnate and the graceless dancer of his dreams led to the Marx Brothers’ first Broadway hit, I’ll Say She Is!, how the stock market crash in 1929 proved a godsend for Groucho (even though he lost nearly a quarter of a million dollars) the adventures of the Marx Brothers in Hollywood, the making of their hilarious films, and Groucho’s triumphant television series, You Bet Your Life!. His solo career included work as a film actor, television game show emcee, and author of The Groucho Letters, Memoirs of a Mangy Lover, and his classic autobiography, Groucho and Me. ![]() The “Me” in the title is a comparatively unknown Marx named Julius (1895-1977), who, under the nom de plume of Groucho, enjoyed a sensational career on Broadway and in Hollywood with such comedy classics as Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera, and A Day at the Races. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() When I first began reading "The Naked and the Dead", the first important soldier's novel following World War II, I did not know that I would complete it on Memorial Day. Thankfully THE NAKED AND THE DEAD is now available, narrated superbly by John Buffalo Mailer. I hope that John narrates other books by Norman Mailer that are not available as audio books, such as DEER PARK, THE EXECUTIONER’S SONG, WHY ARE WE IN VIETNAM, and my favorite, AN AMERICAN DREAM.It’s a shame these books, and all of Norman Mailer’s books, aren’t available as audio books. I’m sure Norman would be extremely proud of him. I’ve listened to hundreds of audio books, and John Buffalo Mailer’s performance ranks among the best. John does an outstanding, professional, insightful, and loving job with the performance. Now we have the audible version of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD read by his son, John Buffalo Mailer. I first started reading Norman Mailer’s books as a high school senior in 1970 with a paperback copy of ARMIES OF THE NIGHT, and have spent the years since reading all of his books-often reading them two or three times each-and considering Mailer as America’s best writer. This allowed Western powers to justify their policy of colonizing foreign lands in the name of "civilizing" them. ![]() Native cultures were almost always judged to fall short in comparison to colonialists' standards. Previous generations of anthropologists had imported their own value systems and culture, regardless of which part of the world they were studying. When she jokingly envisions a moment of voyeurism “because that’s the kind of sicko I am,” she is not really describing her own proclivities. Roach is measuring her own genitalia for one doctor’s study (“It is interesting,” he writes to her, “that you could reach this stage of life and not really have any call to know how the parts line up”) or interviewing skilled Danish pig inseminators, she continues to ask herself whether she’s making her readers queasy. Lawrence, “It all started with George Eliot it was she who put the action on the inside,” thus giving impetus to the rise of the psychological novel, where the most significant actions derive from the motives of the characters rather than from external events. Reviewing Middlemarch in 1873, Henry James concluded, “It sets a limit, we think, to the development of the old-fashioned English novel” Middlemarch does, indeed, take what James calls the panoramic novel-“vast, swarming, deep-colored, crowded with episodes, with vivid images, with lurking master-strokes, with brilliant passages of expression,” seeking to “reproduce the total sum of life in an English village”-to an unsurpassed level of achievement. George Eliot’s (22 November 1819 – 22 December 1880) pivotal position in the history of the novel is attested by some of the most distinguished novelists. ![]() ![]() ![]() Steven Frank is a partner at the law firm Morgan Lewis, specializing in intellectual property and commercial technology law.
